Baggage Guide

Whether you are travelling light with just hand baggage, or are planning to check-in bags into our luggage car, please read the following information before arriving at the station.

Baggage Types

SAR classifies baggage that is permitted to be carried onboard, and checked into our luggage coach into three types:

CABIN

60cm (H) x 40cm (W) x 25cm(D)

MEDIUM

70cm (H) x 45cm (W) x 30cm (D)

LARGE

80cm (H) x 55cm (W) x 35cm (D)

Baggage Allowances

Baggage allowances refer to the free baggage you are permitted to travel with. This allowance will vary depending on the ticket type you have purchased.

  • In addition to the stated onboard baggage allowances, all customers are permitted to travel with one small bag, laptop or briefcase that can fit under your seat.
  • All checked baggage must be secure and in good condition. Any damaged baggage can only be transported if liability is accepted bythe passenger. No open or unsecure bags will be permitted.
  • Infants under 2 years old do not receive a luggage allowance.
  • Pushchairs and prams travel for free in addition to your luggage allowance, but must be checked into our luggage coach. No pushchairs will be permitted to be brought onboard SAR trains due to the limited space available within the luggage racks.
  • Medical Personal Devices (MPD’s) may be carried onboard the train without prior notification, only if the item is within the onboard baggage dimensions.
  • Customers are strongly advised to carry personal medication within their onboard baggage. Any medication that is contained within checked baggage will not be accessible during the journey. Please note supporting documentation such as a prescription letter from your doctor is required when carrying personal medication within onboard or checked baggage.

  • Extra baggage is subject to availability and is non-transferrable between passengers
  • The maximum weight permitted for health and safety reasons per checked bag is 32kg.
  • 15 SR per kg will be charged if an online / app purchased checked bag is over the permitted maximum kg.
  • No refunds are permitted on extra baggage pre-purchased online / on app, except in the following scenarios:
    • You do not travel due to a delayed or cancelled train, an overbooked train or if you are refused travel due to a ticket terms and conditions violation which is later overturned.
    • Your extra baggage is not transported due to an operational or safety reason.
  • Any modifications made to a customer’s booking which includes pre-purchased extra baggage will be carried forward to the new booking. Modification fees will apply in accordance with the ticket type held.
  • SAR reserves the right to deny acceptance of the carriage for any extra baggage purchased for safety or operational reasons.

Mishandled Baggage

If you have lost something on one of our trains or at one of our stations, we will do our best to reunite you with your property.

If your checked baggage does not arrive at your destination station, you must contact the nearest member of station staff, who will assist you in completing a lost property form*. You will be required to provide a clear description of the item that is missing along with your luggage receipt.

Once your luggage has been located, it will be dispatched to your nearest station for collection. All customers must present either their Saudi National ID, Iqama or Passport and a valid ticket and luggage number when collecting lost checked baggage form our stations.

In the unlikely event that your checked baggage cannot be located, SAR will provide compensation as follows:

  • Checked baggage for which no valuables have been declared shall be reimbursed at 75 SR per kilogram of checked baggage.
  • Checked baggage for which valuables have been declared and approved for transit by SAR shall be reimbursed for the value of the baggage, including the valuables with a maximum payment not exceeding 2,500 SR.

*No compensation claims will be accepted if you have not completed a lost checked baggage form before you have left your destination station.

SAR reserves the right to refuse to carry valuable items.

Submit a claim for lost or damaged luggage

Please contact the SAR Customer Support Team on 8001262000, as soon as you realize you have left something providing a clear description of the item that is missing. Our staff will assist you to complete a lost property form, enabling us to check the lost property records to see if your item has been found.

If the item has been found it will be dispatched to the nearest station for your collection. All customers must present either their Saudi National ID, Iqama or Passport and a valid ticket reference number when collecting lost property from our stations.

Please note, anything that you do not check-in, and bring with you to our stations or on our trains is your responsibility. If you lose it or it is stolen, we do not provide any compensation.

We do not accept responsibility for the secure carriage of any valuable items within your checked baggage; therefore we recommend that you pack all valuables in your onboard baggage .

If your checked baggage is damaged, we will only give you compensation if the damage was caused by the negligence of SAR up to a maximum payment of 500 SR.

If your luggage arrives damaged at your destination station, you must contact the nearest member of the SAR station staff, who will assist you in completing a checked baggage form. No compensation claims will be accepted if you have not completed a damaged luggage form before you have left your destination station.
